Nashik is a Punya Bhoomi where Sinhastha Kumbha Mela is held after every 12 years, hence the Sinhastha Bhoomi. It is famous holy Place, for the old temples and Ramkund, through which the Godavari River flows. The city on the northern part of the river is called Panchavati. There are famous five banyan trees, i.e. five Vad trees, which gave this area the name Panchavati. It is said that Lord Shri Ram and Sita along with Laxman stayed at Panchavati during their exile. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga and the origin of river Godavari – the Ganges of South, are just thirty-kilometer from Nashik. It’s the important place to perform the last rites of ancestors for giving their soul salvation make this place The Divine Destination.

Nashik is in the northwest of Maharashtra, 185 km from Mumbai (Bombay) and 220 km from Pune. Nashik is the administrative headquarters of Nashik District and Nashik Division. The "Wine Capital of India", or the "Grape City", as it is popularly known, the city is located in the Western Ghats, on the western edge of the Deccan peninsula on the banks of the Godavari River. The city is known for its picturesque surroundings and pleasant climate. The Godavari River flows through Nashik from its source, which lies to the west-southwest of the city, in the holy place of Trimbakeshwar.
Nashik is also important mythologically, historically, socially and culturally. Known for the temples on the banks of the Godavari, it has historically been one of the holy sites of the Hindu religion. It is one of the four cities that hosts the massive Sinhastha Kumbh Mela once every twelve years.
Legend dictates that the name "Nashik" is derived from the Hindu epic Ramayana. During the exile of Rama, Shoorpanakha the sister of the demon king Ravana tried to seduce Rama. Angered, Rama ordered Lakshmana to cut off Shoorpanakha's nose (nasika). According to the Ramayana, Sita was abducted by Ravana in the area of Panchavati, in the Western Ghats.
Traditionally Nashik is known for its grapes, and modern efforts are on to promote the growth of an export-oriented wine industry in the district. Nashik is also deemed "the third most industrialised city of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune", mainly due to extensive industrial development in recent times. It is home to an important thermal power plant (Eklahare) and a National Treasury Printing Press (India Security Press at Nashik Road). There are five "Industrial Zones" in the Nashik area and its outskirts (Satpur, Ambad, Sinnar, Igatpuri and Dindori). These estates house corporations like Mahindra and Mahindra, MICO (Bosch), VIP Luggage, Crompton Greaves, GlaxoSmithKline, Graphite India Ltd. Shree KalaRam Mandir

Surrounding the building of the Kalaram Mandir is a walled enclosed, which comprises of 96 pillars. The enclosure is entered from the eastern side, through an arched portal. 23 lak rupees and efforts of 2000 workers went into the construction of the temple, which took approximately 12 years. Kalaram Temple is around 70 feet high and has a gold-plated hpeak. Situated near the sanctum sanctorum is Sita gumpha (cave).

Nandur Madhmeshwar Bird Sanctuary is located in Niphad Tehsil of Nashik district in Western Maharashtra. A stone pick up weir was constructed in 1907-13 across the river Godavari just below the confluence of Kodwa and Goadavari rivers at Nandur Madhameshwar. The water level is always fluctuating in Nandur Madhameshwar Lake.

The water released from Gangapur and Darana water reservoirs is stored at Nandur Madhameshwar and subsequently released from here through canals for irrigation. Silts and organic matter that are carried away with water flow are accumulated in the lake, due to which islands and shallow water ponds have been created. This resulted in the biological enriched conditions by which aquatic vegetation has been stabilised. Thus the site has turned into good wetland habitat aptly described as 'Bharatpur Of Maharashtra

River Godavari flows through Nashik and its Northern part is known as Panchavati. Lord Shri Ram and Sita along with Laxman stayed at Panchavati during exile. There are five Banyan (Vad) trees and thua the reason it is called Panchavati.Nearby is Sita Gumpha (cave) where Sita stayed for some time.


Ramkund: The godavari river is one of the holiest places for Hindus all over the world. The pious river bed has 24 tirthas(kund). Ramkund, one of the holy kunds, measures 27 mtrs by 12 mtrs was built in 1696 by Chitrarao Khatarkar and it is believed that Lord Ram and Sita used to bathe in this Kund during their exile. Every Hindu wishes his or her ashes to be immersed in Asthivilaya Tirtha so a sto attain Moksha or liberation of the soul. The ashes of various personalities has been immersed at Ramkund. Memorial ( Smarak) of Father of the Nation Mahtama Gandhi is located near Ramkund.

Surface

Nashik is located at a distance of approximately 180 km from Mumbai and 220 km from Pune and is easily accessible by road from both of the cities. You can easily find State Transport as well as private buses for all the cities in Maharashtra and the neighboring states from here. Taxis are also easily available.

Train

The railway station at Nashik is counted amongst the major stations on the Central Railway. It is serviced by almost all the express and fast trains that go through the region. Reaching Nasik by rail is not at all difficult, since the railway station is connect with all the key cities of Maharashtra as well as India, through direct trains

Air

Nashik city does not have an airport of its own. The airport that falls nearest from its periphery is the Chhatrapati Shivaji international Airport of Mumbai. It is approximately 180 km from the Nashik city and is serviced by almost all the national as well as international airlines. The next nearest airport is that of Pune, a domestic one.
