Mahatma Phule Museum in Pune

In the 19th century the need to exhibit and promote traditional Indian artifacts was felt in India. The country was thus gripped by the museum culture and a large number of museums came up.
How Mahatma Phule Museum Came Into Existence

Some eminent personalities like Bhausahen Natu Laxman Chhatre M.G. Ranade and others from Pune came up with an exhibition at Dane Ali.

The articles on display at the exhibition included silk and cotton clothes clay statues paintings and artistic objects made from clay glass and wood.

The exhibition aimed at promoting and encouraging craftsmen and creating a niche for traditional articles in the market. The objects were promoted as substitutes for the items imported by the British. Indian scholars also organized and conducted seminars to acknowledge the efforts and talent of Indian craftsmen and artists. This finally led to a permanent museum which was accessible to the general public.

When India got her independence it was found that only two museums were owned by the Government - Prince of Wales Museum of Western India and the Lord Ray Industrial Museum of Pune. The latter was under the ownership and management of the then Bombay Government. Later it was renamed Mahatma Phule Museum and the management handed over to a board of trustees.
