Korigad Fort is one of the simplest trekking destinations located in and around Pune. It is a perfect start up point for newbies who have not had a trekking experience before. Just a few steps climb takes you to the very top of the fort.

This fort is also another important tourist attractions near Lonavala. Even though the exact date of construction is not known, the approximate date is around 1500 AD. This fort is around 929 meters above the sea level. The Korigad fort was incorporated into his kingdom by Shivaji in the year 1657.

Korigad was built by Shivaji Maharaj in the year 1657. One of Shivaji's most loved forts; Korigad was incorporated in Swarajya by the great Maratha king along with a number of other forts like Visapur, Tung, Tikona and Lohgad in the same year of its establishment. In the succeeding years, the fort saw years of battle between the Marathas and the British who failed to take control of the fort until 14th March 1818 when the army led by Colonel Prother dropped a cannot ball where the Marathas stored their ammunition on the fort and finally conquered it.

Located at a distance of about 20kms from Lonavla, Korigad is famous for its fortified structure and the view it offers from the top of the dense forest that surrounds this fort. The village located at the foothills of the fort is called Peth- Shahpur which is situated close to the Amby Valley. There are two ways to reach to the top of the fort. The first way comprises of a series of steps which take you all the way to the top of the fort. The 100 odd steps take about 45 mins to climb and take you along a Ganesh Temple and few small caves on the way to the top of the mountain.

A lake has formed close to the base of the hill on which Korigad fort stads due to Mulshi dam. We can see two lakes on the top of the fort. We can also see temple dedicated to Goddess Koraidevi along with small temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Shiva in this fort. The interesting part of the fort is that its wall is completely intact and one can walk along its entire perimeter(about 2 km). Its massive gate is also intact. It has six cannons - the largest of which called the Laxmi Toph is located near the Korai devi temple.
