Kanpur is a marvelous historic city situated on the southwest of Lucknow, is the industrial hub of the state and home to several educational institutes. Kanpur is located on the banks of the River Ganges. It has an area of over 1,200 km (5th largest city in India) and had a population of around 6.1 million in the 2008 census. Kanpur is home to several educational institutions, including an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Kanpur), CSJM University, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), University Institute of Engineering and Technology, GSVM Medical College and Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (AITH).
Kanpur came into the limelight after being transferred to the British by the Nawab of Awadh. With an increase in the number of colonial traders, the most frequently accessed routes were the Grand Trunk Road and the road crossing over from Jhansi to Lucknow. Kanpur also stands witness to the Massacre of Kanpur, a tragic past during the struggle for Indian independence.
