Gwalior is famous city and tourist destination in Madhya Pradesh. This is the ancient capital of the Scindias is in the far north of Madhya Pradesh, a suitable base from which to begin the Bundelkhand circuit. Gwalior is in essence a small town with its necessary share of dust and chaos, but it bears the stamp of a place that has seen much magnificence and knows it. Once the capital of maharajas and Mughl emperors, it is now the seat of the Scindia royal family. It is majestic 10th-century fort, which dominates the whole region from atop a huge bluff.
Unless you happen to be in Gwalior during a special event, there isn't much to do once you've seen the sights, other than wander around the streets and by lanes to absorb the flavour of the city. Parts of it, especially the Old City, make for a very interesting gander on foot. Gwalior is a very accessible getaway, and perfect for a slightly off-beat tow r three day break.
Gwalior is an ancient city and a traveler will have a few local travel options to choose from for travel within the city. Some of the options that are available are the shared tempos, local buses and mini buses, and horse drawn carriages or Tongas.
Bus :-
Recently the Gwalior city bus has been launched and these run on specific routes. The Gwalior Railway Station is an important junction that is connected to many cities in India. There are two other stations that are within the Gwalior city limits and travelers arriving by trains have many options. There are tempos and auto rickshaws that are available from the railway station to any part of the city. The tempos are shared and are cheap and they operate in fixed routes. However carrying luggage in tempos might not be possible as they are crowded.
Auto Rickshaw :-
Auto rickshaws from the railway station are numerous and are the best option. There are no separate night fares for auto rickshaws and they are not metered.
Horse Carriage :-
Horse drawn carriages also ply on fixed routes and they are available in many parts of the city. The prices are cheap and also negotiable.
Mini Bus :-
The Gwalior city bus and the other local mini buses are another mode of public transport. They are inexpensive and can be hailed of the road. They usually charge around Rs 40 for one end of the city to the other.
