History

Glitzy malls, swanky apartments, eye catching skyscrapers characterize the city of Gurgaon which is situated in the Gurgaon district of the north Indian state of Haryana. It is one of Delhi`s four major satellite cities. Gurgaon is basically a commercial and business city and the hub of many multinational companies. Strategically located, the National Highway linking Mumbai and Delhi via Jaipur passes through this city. The nearest access point is the airport at Palam, which is located at a distance of 17 km. from Gurgaon. The railway station is located at the extreme corner of the city, which connects Rewari on one side and Delhi Cantonment on the other. Geographically, the town is located between 28.47° North latitude and 77.03° East longitude at a height of 220 metres (721 feet) above mean sea level.

In Hindu mythology it is believed that Gurgaon was the ancestral village of Guru Dronacharya, guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Indian epic of Mahabharata. The name was given in this context where Guru refers to Dronacharya and `gaon` the village. Gurgaon was initially the part of the North Western Provinces but in 1861 it was transferred to Punjab.

The India census report published in 2001, Gurgaon had a population of 173, 542. Males and females constitute 54% and 46% of the population respectively. In Gurgaon, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. The literacy rate of Gurgaon is 77%, which is higher than the nationwide average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate is 81% and the female literacy rate is 73%.

Renowned as one of the most prominent outsourcing and offshoring hubs of India, the offices of a plethora of multinational companies like Genpact, Dell, Accenture are located here. Several IT and pharmaceutical firms are located here. The city boasts of world-class shopping malls, restaurants and entertainment facilities, which is a major source of attraction for outsiders.

With thousands of professionals residing and working in the city, the population has a high purchasing power. This has an impact on the culture of the city, which is becoming increasingly global with every passing day. This reality contradicts with the middle and the lower- middle class people living in the outskirts of the city under adverse conditions. Some of the major places of interest in and around the city are Sohna, which is visited for its hot springs, Nuh, situated about 45 km. south of Gurgaon is famous for the tomb of Sheikh Musa which has shaking minarets. Pataudi, Ferozpur Jhirka and Farukhnagar are other towns, which are worth visiting. Other frequently visited places are Cawn Sarai, Nehru Stadium and Kamla Nehru Park. The Temple of Sheetla Mata is also a major attraction in the city.

Ten Km from Gurgaon and 42 km from Delhi, the place is a heaven for bird lovers. It is a find of Peter Jackson, the world famous authority ornithologist. It was opened for tourists on 6th Feb. 1972. To this lonely and lovely retreat, flock the migrant birds from Europe and Siberia. These birds come here with the onset of winter and return when their colder homes have warmed up. Camping equipment like beds, Chairs, central tables, lights, stoves etc are available at the site, on hire at reasonable rates. To facilitate bird watching, there are observation hides and watch tower.

The tiny town with pretty name, Sohna is credited with sulphur springs. This is situated in the heart of the town by the side of a perpendicular rock and is approachable only by foot through narrow lanes which are inaccessible to vehicles. The water is strongly sulphurous and its temperature varies from 46° C to 51.7C. ° The present site of main kund, called Shiv Kund, is believed to have been the abode of hermits during ancient times. The hot water is believed to have curative effect for skin infections and diseases like gout and rheumatism. Hindus consider the tank sacred and come for a dip in its water on solar/lunar eclipse and Somavati Amavasya. The complex is studded with an extravagance of colourful flowers, trees and shrubs. Its vast landscape, with peacocks strutting about, grips one with all its beauty and splendor. Sohna by night becomes a wonderland of lights, simply bewitching.

Surface

Gurgaon has a well planned road layout and there is an effective transportation system. State transport buses are there which connect Gurgaon with the rest of Delhi and other neighboring cities. Besides this you can also go for taxis, auto rickshaws and the state buses.

Train

Gurgaon has its own railway station which is located at the extreme corner of the city. The Railway Station connects to Rewari on one side and the Delhi Cantonment on the other side. The major railway station near Gurgaon is Delhi or Faridabad. The Delhi or Faridabad Station connects Gurgaon to the rest of the country.

Air

The Indira Gandhi National Airport is one of the nearest airports which 10 km away from Delhi It connects Gurgaon to the rest of the country and also to the world. There are number flights to Delhi which helps the tourists to reach to this city.
