History

Badoda is a city as well as a municipality in the Sheopur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. The district is situated in the north of the state and constitutes a part of the Chambal Division. The district headquarters are located in the town of Sheopur. Other towns include Karahal, Bijeypur and Badoda. According to the 2001 census, the population of the district is 559,715. It occupies an area of 666,081 square kms. An important feature of the district is Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary or Palpur- Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary (located between the latitudes of 25°30` and 25°53` East and the longitudes of 77°07` and 77°26` North). It is around 120 kilometres from Gwalior. An area of 344.686 square kilometres was reserved as a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1981. Since then this has been handed over to the Kuno Wildlife Division with a further area of 900 square kilometres added as a safeguard area around the sanctuary.

As per the 2001 India census, Badoda has a population of 15,672. Males constitute 53% of the population and females comprise 47%. The mean literacy rate of the town is 48%, lower than the national average of 59.5%. 67% of the males and 33% of females are literate. 19% of the population is children below six years of age.

It is located within the Lakshmi Vilas Palace premises. Adorned with a spectacular collection of sculptures in marble and bronze, it also houses the collection of art of the royal family. Collection of European, Roman, and Greco –Roman art forms are seen here. Chinese and Japanese art collection also adorns the Museum.

Sayaji Bagh

This is a widespread park, encircled by a mini railway. The park houses the Baroda museum and art gallery which have few fine statues and carvings. The gallery has miniatures as well as mediocre collection of European masters. The planetarium which is seen here gives demonstration in English and Hindi at 5 pm and 6 pm respectively with minimal entry fees. The zoo is open from 9am to 5pm on all days except Thursdays.

Nazarbaug Palace

This palace was built in old classical style .The palace was used for ceremonial occasions in the past and now it houses the heirlooms which once belonged to the royal family.
